Intelligent Forward Collision Warning: A Nissan's World's First Technology

Since 2013, Nissan's collision warning systems have kept drivers ahead of the game. At CES 2017 we're going to show you the future again.

Nissan has always been a dreamer as well as a doer.

These ADAS (Advance Driver Assistance Systems) technologies formed the base of our research and development in autonomous drive technologies, our most advanced forms of driver assistance technologies.

While these technologies are capable of operating autonomously, Nissan’s belief and approach remains about enhancing the human driving experience rather than replacing it.

We believe in democratizing advanced technology to people. With an emphasis on increased safety, efficiency and trust that these technologies are bringing to millions of existing Nissan drivers.

2017 Nissan Leaf UNBOXING Review - Don't Let Its Dumb Name Make You Hate It

For today's unboxing review we bring you the car that proved it's possible for there to be an affordable EV with decent driving range, the Nissan Leaf. Launched back in 2010, it's since gone on to sell a total of 230,000 units worldwide and counting. Impressive. Our Leaf, a fully-loaded SL trim equipped with a leather interior and upgraded battery that allows for a 107-mile driving range, did more than impress us. Under the right circumstances (meaning a short commute to work, etc). we'd consider buying one. Unlike, say, a Tesla, the Leaf has a relatively low base price, starting at $29,000, but that's before a $7,500 US government tax credit. Several states offer additional tax incentives, too.

What else do we like about the Leaf? For starters, its five-door hatchback body style allows for it to be a suitable family car when necessary, and its dashboard design is, dare we say it, stylish. No joke. Bottom line is if you're looking for an EV that won't break the bank and is built by a reliable automaker, then the Nissan Leaf is a solid buy. Enjoy the review!

Intelligent Distance Control: A Nissan's World's First Technology

2017 Nissan Maxima UNBOXING Review - Is It Really The Four-Door Sports Car?

For our latest unboxing review we bring you the completely redesigned 2017 Nissan Maxima. Now, Nissan has, once again, branded the Maxima as a four-door sports car. But is it, really? Let's start with its engine: a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 making 300 hp and 261 lb-ft of torque. It's paired exclusively with a CVT which sends power to the front wheels only. Looking at this latest Maxima from the outside, it's quite clear that Nissan put a lot of extra effort into styling. Compared to the previous generation Maxima, this one looks more premium.

The interior? It's literally Infiniti level quality and sophistication. Our tester is the top trim Platinum, meaning it comes with beautiful Mahogany wood tone finish inside, an 11-speaker Bose audio system, and NASA-inspired "Zero Gravity" front seats. Big question is whether or not the new Maxima drives like a sports car. Well, let's put it this way: Nissan made a nice effort but it's not quite a true sports sedan. What the Maxima really is, in our opinion, is an outstanding full-size luxury sedan. Combined with its spacious interior, the Maxima is now a competitor with the likes of the Chevrolet Impala and Hyundai Azera, though we think it's way more exciting than either of those two. Enjoy the review!

Nissan Group Retains Top Spot for Full-Line Manufacturer in EPA's Annual Fuel Economy Review for Third Consecutive Year

Only automaker among top seven manufacturers on the list to offer a full vehicle lineup, including mid and full-size trucks and SUVs
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nissan Group is the most fuel efficient full-line automaker in the United States for the third year running, according to the recently released 2016 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) "CO2 and Fuel Economy Trends" Report. Nissan's fleet-wide fuel economy rating of 28.3 adjusted combined mpg was highest among all full-line automakers in the annual report, which is the authoritative reference on new light-duty vehicle carbon dioxide emissions, fuel economy and powertrain technology trends in the United States.
Nissan's 28.3 combined adjusted mpg rating, based on 2015 model-year Nissan and Infiniti vehicles, marks a 1.3 combined adjusted mpg improvement over 2014 model-year Nissan and Infiniti vehicles, the second largest year-over-year gain in the industry. The 28.3 combined adjusted mpg mark moves Nissan up one position on the list this year to the third place spot overall.
As a full-line automobile manufacturer, Nissan sells passenger cars, SUVs, CUVs, mid-size and full-size pickup trucks, compact and full-size vans, vehicles with V-8 engines, a 600-horsepower supercar and a zero-emissions plug-in battery electric vehicle – a broad range of products to meet consumer needs across the full spectrum of product segments.
"As consumers demand more fuel efficient options, Nissan continues to incorporate engineering advancements such as reduced powertrain friction, improved aerodynamics and the use of efficient Xtronic transmissions in each new model," said Michael Bunce, vice president, Product Planning, Nissan North America. "Evolving industry regulations continue to challenge us to provide the safest, most efficient products to our customers, and this distinction reaffirms the exemplary effort our engineers and designers have taken to ensure continuous vehicle improvements and owner satisfaction."
This year's improvement came in part due to the introduction of the third-generation Nissan Murano for the 2015 model year. Nissan Murano boasts an ultra-low, sports-car-like 0.31 coefficient of drag, lower curb weight than the previous generation and efficiency improvements to its powertrain. Nissan also employs an engineering lightweight strategy to all new models to significantly reduce vehicle curb weight – a key factor to improving fleet fuel economy.
Nissan expects continued improvements in future model years, with next year's report including the redesigned 2016 Maxima and all-new 2016 TITAN full-size pickup truck for the first time. Maxima and TITAN both feature improved efficiency without compromise to the customer.

Nissan Launches 2017 Versa Note and 2017 JUKE Black Pearl Edition Prior to Los Angeles Auto Show Debuts

  • Two new 2017 Nissan models announced prior to introductions next week at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show
  • 2017 Versa Note features revised front end styling, vibrant exterior colors, new wheel designs
  • JUKE Black Pearl Edition offers unique black exterior and interior treatment with contrasting white accents – production limited to 1,250 units
  • New Versa Note and JUKE Black Pearl Edition to be joined by two additional world debuts on November 15th and 16th in Los Angeles
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nissan today took the wraps off two new 2017 models – the revised Versa Note and limited production JUKE Black Pearl Edition – prior to each vehicle's respective debut next week at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show.
The two models are the first of four new vehicle models that will be shown for the first time in Los Angeles. A new Nissan NISMO product will meet the media on Nov. 15th, while the "2017 Nissan Rogue: Rogue One Star Wars Limited Edition" will take the stage at a press conference in the Los Angeles Convention Center on Nov. 16th. Details on the NISMO product and the Rogue One Star Wars Limited Edition will be available following each vehicle's respective unveiling.
"The Nissan new product onslaught for the 2017 model year is so extensive, we're bringing out the new Versa Note and JUKE Black Pearl early," said Michael Bunce, vice president, Product Planning, Nissan North America, Inc. "The four latest additions to the lineup follow our ongoing 'Year of the Truck' campaign, which has seen the introduction of an all-new Armada, new Rogue, revised Pathfinder and new TITAN half-ton and TITAN Single Cab."

About the 2017 Nissan Versa Note
The 2017 Versa Note is highlighted by a dynamic new front end treatment, which accentuates its popular forward-looking style even more with a new front fascia and "V-Motion" grille that flows seamlessly with the swept-back halogen headlights.
“Versa Note and Versa sedan combine to be America’s best-selling nameplate in the entry level segment1,” added Bunce. “The enhancements for the new model year give Versa Note a fresh new look, which should help keep the Versa pair in the number one position again in 2017.”
While now sharing a closer family resemblance with Nissan Sentra, Altima and Maxima, the new design retains the vibrant Versa Note personality, especially when wrapped in a new exterior color – Monarch Orange or Deep Blue Pearl. In addition, Versa Note S Plus, SV and SL grades receive the sporty rear fascia previously available only on Versa Note SR.
Other enhancements for the 2017 model year include a new wheel cover design for S Plus and SV grades and a revised 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheel design for the SL trim level. Inside, the 2017 Versa Note includes a number of customer input-driven changes, such as larger cupholders, the addition of a second 12-volt outlet for SV, SR and SL trims and the relocation of the first 12-volt outlet and USB auxiliary port to the front of the center console.
The 2017 Versa Note is powered by a 1.6-liter DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder engine, matched with a next-generation Nissan Xtronic transmission, helping achieve up to an EPA-estimated 39 miles per gallon highway fuel economy. The advanced Xtronic transmission features a retuned D-step Logic Control, which simulates shifts, giving a more natural acceleration feeling without holding a high rpm constant.
Versa Note is offered in four well-equipped models: S Plus, SV, SR and SL. Versa Note SR offers a number of sporty exterior and interior treatments, including fog lights, rear spoiler, body-color side sills, suede-like seats, JUKE-style sport leather wrapped steering wheel, 16-inch sport machine-finished aluminum-alloy wheels and outside rearview mirrors with integrated turn signals.
The top-of-the-line Versa Note SL features a range of special equipment, including NissanConnectSM with Navigation and Mobile Apps, 5.8-inch color touch-screen display, Nissan Voice Recognition for navigation and audio, SiriusXM® Traffic, SiriusXM® Travel Link™ (SiriusXM® subscription required, sold separately), class-exclusive1 Around View® Monitor2, heated front seats, heated side view mirrors and 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.

About the 2017 Nissan JUKE Black Pearl Edition
Starting with a well-equipped JUKE SV (with a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive), the 2017 JUKE Black Pearl Edition provides aftermarket style personalization straight from the factory. It is the third such vehicle created by the JUKE Color Studio, following the previous "Yellow Stinger" and "Black Stinger" editions.
Just 1,250 units will be built – 1,000 to be sold in the United States and 250 in Canada. JUKE Black Pearl Edition package has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP)3 of $1,190 USD. The 2017 JUKE SV is priced at $22,550 USD for the front-wheel drive model and $24,400 USD for the all-wheel drive model.
"The 'Black Pearl' name draws on Nissan heritage, reviving a name originally used on a limited edition 1978 280Z model," said Bunce. "It also embraces the spirit of every Nissan Z®, combining bold styling with dynamic performance."
The modifications to the Black Pearl Edition exterior begin up front with white bumper accents and white outside trim rings on the distinctive JUKE headlights. On the sides, white door handles and white caps for the heated outside rearview mirrors continue the theme, leading into the white rear spoiler and white accents on the rear bumper. A special Black Pearl Edition badge completes the exterior enhancements.
Exclusive Super Black-painted 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels mounted with 215/55R17 all-season tires complement the JUKE high stance and sporty driving position.
Inside, the Black Pearl Edition includes black cloth heated front seats with white inserts and stitching, white and black cloth door trim inserts and white power window switch finishers. The signature JUKE motorcycle-style center console is painted white, while the steering wheel features white stitching. Completing the high-contrast interior appearance are white air vent trim rings and white accents on the shift knob.
Like all 2017 JUKE models (non-NISMO), the Black Pearl Edition features a 1.6-liter Direct Injection Gasoline (DIG) Turbo, 16-valve DOHC aluminum-alloy inline 4-cylinder engine rated at 188 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque – combining spirited performance and good fuel economy.
One transmission is offered – Nissan's advanced Xtronic transmission with Manual Mode and D-step Logic Control that simulates shifts, giving a natural acceleration feeling without holding a high rpm constant. Fuel economy for JUKE front-wheel drive models is rated at 28/32/29 mpg city/highway/combined. 2017 JUKE all-wheel drive models are rated at 26/30/28 mpg city/highway/combined.
Like all 2017 JUKE models, the Black Pearl Edition interior offers ample roominess and space for five adults. The combination of the fold-down 60/40-split bench seat and flat load floor provides passenger and cargo hauling flexibility. Standard features include RearView Monitor5, Nissan Intelligent KeyTM with Push Button Ignition, USB connection port for iPod® interface and other compatible devices, Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System, 5.0-inch color display, Streaming audio via Bluetooth®, Siri™ Eyes Free and Hands-free Text Messaging Assistant4.

2016 Nissan Versa Note

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – For the second consecutive year, the Nissan Versa Note has been named by the editors at Kelley Blue Book to the annual KBB.com "10 Best Back-to-School Cars" list.
Once again the vehicles selected for a "Back-to-School" recommendation had to be available for under $20,000 and meet the editors' criteria of being safe and stylish. The 2016 Versa Note has a starting Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price* (M.S.R.P.) of $14,230 USD. KBB.com, utilizing its Fair Purchase Price (FPP) data, ranked Versa Note the second lowest priced vehicle on the 2016 list.
"We are honored to be recognized by the editors of Kelley Blue Book for the second school year in a row," said Dan Mohnke, vice president, Nissan Chief Marketing Manager & Marketing Operations. "Versa Note offers a great combination of available safety and security features, combined with an affordable price. It also has the sporty style and roomy, versatile interior that is perfect for the demands of campus life."
The 2016 Versa Note is offered in a range of five well-equipped models: S, S Plus, SV, SR and SL. Each is powered by a 1.6-liter DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder. "Safety is the paramount decision when it comes to back-to-school cars, and practicality and affordability are also high on the list of desirable characteristics, at least according to parents," said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book's KBB.com. "The kids involved also prefer to have a car they're happy to be seen in, which suggests that style is part of the equation too. Our 2016 list of the 10 Best Back-to-School Cars addresses all of these wants with an array of cool cars that has something for just about any returning student."

Nissan North America doubles down on partnership with Habitat for Humanity with "The House the Media Built"

NASHVILLE Tenn. – Nissan North America further reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to Habitat for Humanity by bringing in more than 50 journalists from around the nation to participate in its 11th home build in Nashville with the organization, dubbing it "The House the Media Built." This accelerated, six-day build began Oct. 17 and was completed Friday, Oct. 28 at 4 pm with the home dedication.

"Nissan began its relationship with Habitat for Humanity more than a decade ago with a donation of $1 million, 50 TITAN trucks and an abundance of employee volunteer time following Hurricane Katrina," said Dan Bedore, director, Nissan Division Communications. "This relationship goes to the heart of our values, not only as a corporate citizen, but as neighbors in the communities in which we live, work and serve."

"The House the Media Built" follows the company's recent announcement pledging another $1 million grant to the organization, and another decade of service helping to build more homes for families in need of decent, affordable housing. Portions of Nissan's contribution will be used to expand Habitat's vehicle fleet, which supports disaster recovery efforts, with the largest portion going towards the cost of building homes in areas of the country where Nissan has an operational presence.

Nissan's partnership with Habitat began in 2005 when it donated 50 trucks and mobilized employees to assist in home building following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in the Gulf Coast region. In the last decade, Nissan has donated an additional 88 vehicles. Since 2006, Nissan's employees have logged more than 80,000 volunteer hours with Habitat for Humanity, building 71 homes across the U.S. and 11 in Nashville.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Nashville seeks to put God's love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope. Prior to becoming homeowners, Habitat future homeowners attend home education classes, work at the build site, and volunteer at Habitat's retail outlet, the ReStore. Since 1985, Habitat of Greater Nashville has built or recycled more than 770 homes. Nissan’s Future Lab Experiments imagine new vehicle ownership models and map the future of mobility

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – Nissan is conducting a series of real-world experiments and trials to bring future mobility scenarios to life through several "Living Labs" underway at Nissan Future Lab. The "Living Lab" research provides user data to help Nissan anticipate and evolve to meet future transportation needs.

The difference between traditional research methods and Nissan's "Living Labs" is the research relies on networking with external partners – like San Francisco-based Scoot Networks – to uncover opportunities and learn through observing user behaviors.

"Working within the living lab framework allows Nissan to experiment out in the marketplace," said Rachel Nguyen, executive director, Nissan Future Lab. "By combining our hardware with outside software, services and systems into collaborative beta tests, Nissan has the opportunity to develop new products and service offerings that fit in the new mobility economy."

Inspired by rapid developments in electric and autonomous technology as well as ride sharing trends, Nissan's "Living Labs" focus on vehicle ownership structures, the changing marketplace for vehicle technology and new uses for electric vehicles.

Vehicle ownership structures. With the fast-paced growth of smart technologies and the emergence of the sharing economy, Nissan Future Lab is studying different sized and packaged vehicle solutions. Last October, Nissan launched its first "Living Lab" with Scoot Networks to bring 10 Nissan New Mobility Concept Vehicles (NNMC) to Scoot's fleet in San Francisco. The electric-powered "micromobility" vehicles fit between a small motorcycle and a full-size vehicle and are available for rental using the Scoot app sharing platform. Through the pilot, Nissan is gathering data on city dwellers mobility choices for short distance trips, and the role electric vehicles play as shared transportation options.

The changing vehicle technology marketplace. The sharing economy also presents new opportunities to leverage vehicle technology. Studying the emerging mobility markets and understanding new business needs – like redistributing shared vehicles to their points of origin – can lead to new applications for still-developing vehicle technologies. The Scoot "Living Lab" is also providing data on vehicle distribution to help Nissan better understand the distance traveled from the origin, popular origin points and other user behaviors.

New uses for electric vehicles. Nissan is also actively studying the expanded use of electric vehicles including vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology. Since 2014, Nissan has participated in a large V2G pilot program with the U.S. Air Force. A fleet of modified Nissan LEAF electric vehicles discharge power back into the gird through a series of bi-directional charging stations. The exchange is used to balance the overall load by absorbing excess power, then putting it back into the grid during times of high demand.

"The Future Lab team is exploring 'Living Lab' projects designed to help us better understand the real-world benefits of V2G technology for individual electric vehicle consumers and how it fits into their mobility lifestyle in the future," added Nguyen.

Rachel Nguyen will provide an update on Nissan's "Living Labs" project during the "Car of Tomorrow: Hardware Makers Building Partnerships to Succeed in a High-Tech World" session on Wednesday, Aug. 3 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the Center for Automotive Research's Annual Management Briefing Seminar in Traverse City.
